Policy on using Gen AI

The Indonesian Journal of Teaching in Science (IJoTIS) recognises that generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools and AI-assisted technologies are increasingly used in scholarly work. This policy sets out how such tools may and may not be used in manuscripts submitted to the journal.

Authorship

An AI tool cannot be listed as an author or co-author. Authorship carries responsibilities - accountability for the work, the ability to approve the final version, and the ability to respond to queries after publication - that only humans can bear. Any attempt to list an AI tool as an author will result in the manuscript being returned.

Permitted Use

Authors may use AI tools to improve the readability and language of their manuscript, for example for grammar checking, translation support, or stylistic editing. Such use must be accompanied by careful human review, since AI tools can generate authoritative-sounding but incorrect or biased output.

Disclosure

Any use of generative AI beyond basic grammar and spelling correction must be disclosed. Authors must add a statement in the Acknowledgement section naming the tool and version used, and describing how it was used. For example:

During the preparation of this work the authors used [tool name and version] in order to [purpose]. After using this tool, the authors reviewed and edited the content as needed and take full responsibility for the content of the publication.

Prohibited Use

• Generating or fabricating research data, results, images, or references.
• Producing substantial portions of the manuscript text and presenting them as the authors' original writing.
• Generating an abstract, conclusion, or literature review without substantive human authorship and verification.
• Manipulating figures or images in a way that misrepresents the original data.

Authors are fully responsible for the accuracy and integrity of their manuscript, including any content produced with AI assistance. Fabricated citations generated by AI tools are treated as research misconduct.

Reviewers and Editors

• Reviewers must not upload a manuscript, or any part of it, to a generative AI tool, as this breaches the confidentiality of the manuscript and the authors' proprietary rights.
• Reviewers must not use AI tools to generate their review report. The critical assessment must be the reviewer's own.
• Editors must not upload manuscripts or correspondence to AI tools and remain responsible for the editorial process and the final decision.
